Different types of mining machinery

The mining industry, according to the Bureau of Labour Statistics, consists of five primary segments: coal mining, gas and oil extracting, non-metal mining, metal ore mining and supporting mining activities, such as resource transportation.

There is an enormous number of machinery employed in all of the mining industry, some of them specific, buy some used throughout the industry, such as draglines, drills, continuous miners, excavators, draglines, rock dusters, shuttle cars, scoops and long wall miners. Here we will explain each of these machines used in the general industry.

  • Excavators

Shovels and steam shovels are nowadays replaced with excavators. This is a mobile vehicle that moves on tracks or with standard wheels, and it is used to remove earth. It moves with a rotating platform, off of which comes a hinged arm with a bucket or scoop attached for digging.

  • Drills

this machine is mostly employed in gas and oil extraction mining. It consists of a drill that is able to reach underground deposits before piping the resources to the surface. It is also used by coal and mineral mining to drill the surface and create an extensive series of holes that are later filled with explosive charges to blast chunks of earth, making the extraction easier.

  • Draglines

these earth moving machines are used to drag away dirt and expose underlying coal or mineral deposits. They are considered to be one of the largest machines on the planet, and can remove several hundred tons of material in a single move.

  • Continuous miners

These machines with rotating arrays of teeth are used to scrape coal from coal beds. They can also replace miners in some dangerous situations.

  • Roof bolters

These are used to support tunnel roofs and prevent underground collapses. They are large and function by hydraulic power.

  • Long wall miners

In the case that you are looking to remove large, rectangular sections of coal, instead of scraping coal, as continuous miners. They consist of a series of large cutting shearers and self-raising hydraulic system that supports the mineshaft ceiling while working.

  • Shuttle cars and scoops

Electric-powered shuttle cars are used to transport coal from the coal bed to safer spots in the mines. Up to here, they can be transported by standard scoops or haulage vehicles. Miners use haulage vehicles for many tasks.

  • Rock dusters

These are pressurized pieces of equipment used by coal miners to spray dead mineral dust over flammable coal dust. This helps preventing fires and explosions.
